The perfect texture for piping and decorating! This delicious frosting is the icing on the cake! Or, eat it all with a spoon. Why not?
For this recipe, I use a stand mixer. Mixing by hand won’t get that smooth, whipped texture.
Velvet Vegan Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
In a stand mixer, with the paddle attachment, add:
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 cups cold water
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
Mix on low speed for 1 minute, until the mixture becomes a paste. Then, turn the speed up to medium and allow to mix for 3 minutes. Then, add:
- 1 cup cold vegetable shortening
- 1 T butter vanilla flavor (not vanilla extract)
- Pinch salt
Mix on low speed for one minute, then turn the speed up to medium high (6 on my KitchenAid stand mixer) and allow to whip for 5 minutes longer, pausing every minute to scrape down the sides.
Use immediately, or place in an airtight container in the fridge until ready. Makes approx 3 cups.
